Zakaat

Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah are like grains that produce seven spikes, each bearing a hundred grains. Allah multiplies His reward to whoever He wishes: He is limitless and all knowing.
(Quran 2:261)

About Zakaat

Zakat is the compulsory giving of a set proportion of one’s wealth to charity. It is regarded as a type of worship and of self-purification. Zakat is the third Pillar of Islam. About Zakat As the third pillar of Islam, Zakat is an obligatory share of wealth ordained by God to be redistributed among Muslims. It also allows us to be conscious of the plight of others and develop a deeper concern for our fellow men. There are two forms of Zakat: Zakat Fitrah and Zakat on wealth.

With the literal meaning of the word being ‘to cleanse’, Muslims believe that paying zakat purifies, increases and blesses the remainder of their wealth. Zakat is 2.5% of wealth that has been in one’s possession for a lunar year. If wealth amounts to less than a threshold figure, termed the nisab, then no zakat is payable. If wealth amounts to more than the nisab, zakat becomes obligatory.

Who deserves to receive your zakat? Zakat can be paid to the following who fall into one or more of eight zakatable categories designated by God in the Quran (9:60).

1.The needy

2. The poor

3. Collectors of Zakat (i.e. GiveLight Foundation)

4. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled (i.e. new Muslims and friends of the Muslim community)

5. Those in bondage (i.e. slaves and captives)

6. The debt-ridden

7. In the cause of God

8. The wayfarer, meaning those who are stranded or traveling with few resources.
